Renzo Piano Il Ponte
A SHIP ON PAPER
A standalone volume, part of a special project in the work of the great Genoese architect. The beginning of an editorial journey.
The inauguration of the Ponte Genova San Giorgio, two years after the tragedy of August 2018, was one of the few positive news stories in Italy in 2020. The project holds special meaning for Genoa-born architect Renzo Piano: in public discourse, the new bridge symbolizes the city’s —and the nation’s— rebirth. The design of the structure is inspired by the forms of a great white ship, its “sails” stretching over the Polcevera valley — names sadly etched into Italian history.
Bellissimo’s project offered the opportunity to evolve the graphic design of the Foundation’s monographs dedicated to the work of Renzo Piano’s studio. Starting from the well-established square format, the restyling introduced several updates: a new layout, refreshed typography, and print finishes — like the embossed cover that highlights the architect’s hand-drawn sketches.
With this volume, Bellissimo marks the beginning of a new phase in its collaboration with the Renzo Piano Foundation. From the book on the Bridge, the studio has gone on to design the monographs that document the architect’s latest projects around the world.
The graphic design focuses on the fundamental element of light — already central to the architectural project.
Graphic design is what makes the project readable. More than that: it builds content hierarchy, guides the reader, and suggests associations.
Lia Piano, Editorial Director
A central band runs through the entire volume in various graphic and color treatments, serving as the unifying element of the layout.
