Open Sound Festival
Music and matter
In the landscape of Italian music festivals, a land music experience does stand out. The connection between sound and land, in Bellissimo’s visual for the 2023 edition of the Open Sound festival in Matera.
Open Sound is a music experience program created to bring together the sounds of popular culture with new forms of expression. Bellissimo supported the organizing association in a process of communication review and consolidation: the branding phase helped clarify the team’s activities —a workshop and format for creating new repertoires, and a festival— as well as the core values underlying both. Open Sound seeks to reconnect with the original value of the relationship with music, expressed through the motto Reliving Origins, developed by Bellissimo.
Building on the insights gathered in the initial research phase, the project focuses on the visual identity for the 2023 edition of the festival, held in Matera and other locations across Basilicata — with artists including Nu Genea, Jeff Mills, and Ninos du Brasil in the line-up. The campaign emphasizes the core themes of the festival’s musical and cultural program: the goal is to reaffirm Open Sound’s vision within a crowded calendar of musical events.
In the red-hued landscapes designed by Bellissimo, the festival presents its reflection on the rapport between music and land — a relationship to be renewed over time, moving beyond mere rediscovery, to return to the original meaning of making music on the land. This gave rise to the concept of a land music experience, where the physical landscape, in its material presence, becomes a soundscape. This idea drives communication across posters and social media, with Bellissimo also creating all the content in the weeks leading up to the event.
