ISI Foundation
THE VALUE OF DATA
A globally recognized institute embarks on a full rebranding journey to open up to the public and share its perspective on data culture — a new direction.
In Turin, Italy, a scientific research center renowned worldwide for its expertise in data science applied to public health and other areas of collective relevance stands out for its international excellence. Yet, until recently, this reputation was not matched by an equally strong public image or communication approach. With this in mind, ISI Foundation partnered with Bellissimo for a full-scale brand identity overhaul, signaling a renewed commitment to public engagement.
The collaboration reaches a pivotal moment during the initial branding phase. Through interviews with the center’s key figures, led by physicist Alessandro Vespignani (President) and Ciro Cattuto (Scientific Director), Bellissimo develops a scenario and vision document. This serves as the foundation for all subsequent communication and storytelling, grounded in the brand’s core values and the Stella Polare™ framework
The visual identity, with its adaptable graphic elements, becomes an integral part of ISI’s storytelling, communicating the meaning and value of data.
Interdisciplinary by vocation, the commitment of ISI Foundation is scientific, cultural, societal: by advancing data science, ISI connects different fields of study and stakeholders, institutions and academia, companies and non-profits, to enable better public decision-making and drive change — “Living data, breaking through barriers,” as articulated by the studio. This process of “bringing things into focus” proved essential in the development of the new visual identity.
Versatility meets distinctiveness. The logo design project is, more broadly, the creation of an entire visual universe.
The design system easily opens up to illustrative styles and animations for future content creation.
More than a visual identity, the project presents a dynamic graphic system centered on a symbol: ISI’s new logo, designed to adapt and transform according to different needs — always following clear rules. The result is a communication with a positive personality and an instantly contemporary look.
The visual language opens up endless ways to express the wide range of experiences and the richness of topics addressed by ISI Foundation — through animations and videos, in physical installations, and on the new website. The rebranding also introduces a brand architecture, creating three sub-brands corresponding to the institute’s three main focus areas, along with a color-coding system to make scientific content and ISI initiatives easier to navigate and understand.
The new identity welcomes the audience at the 2023 Lagrange Prize, organized by Agenzia Uno.
The project includes a spin-off connected to the Lagrange Project, a research support program promoted by Fondazione CRT, with ISI Foundation coordinating the scientific activities. Bellissimo has revamped the visual identity of the initiative dedicated to the renowned Turin-born mathematician, working in continuity with ISI’s visual identity. The 2023 Lagrange Prize ceremony marks the first opportunity to present the ongoing rebranding.
ISI Foundation’s new storytelling approach finds its way on the website, too. The web experience immerses visitors in the heart of the center’s data culture, publications, and initiatives. Everything is presented from a “pop” take, in line with the identity designed by Bellissimo to bring the public closer to the institute’s perspective on data culture: blocks and animations alternate with rhythm, creating an ever-moving,
ever-recombining presentation of ISI.
